Travelling from Kenya

Egypt from
Nairobi.

Nairobi to Cairo is one of the shortest long-distance hops in Africa. Even a week is enough for the pyramids, the Nile and a few days by the sea.

The essentials

Kenya to Egypt
at a glance.

FlightsNairobi (Jomo Kenyatta) has non-stop flights to Cairo, taking roughly 4 to 5 hours.
Time differenceKenya is one hour ahead of Egypt in winter. During Egyptian summer time there is no difference.
VisaCheck what applies to Kenyan passports on the official e-Visa portal or with the Egyptian embassy in Nairobi.
Yellow feverEgypt asks travellers arriving from countries with yellow fever risk, which include Kenya, for a valid vaccination certificate. Carry your card.
MoneyShillings are not exchanged in Egypt. Bring US dollars or use an international card.
Best monthsOctober to April. The August school holidays are hot in the Nile Valley but good for the Red Sea.

Visa rules depend on your passport and can change. Confirm the current requirements on the official Egypt e-Visa portal or with the Egyptian embassy before you book flights.

Planning notes

What to think about
before you book.

Because the flight is short and the clocks barely change, Kenyan travellers can do more in fewer days. A seven-day trip comfortably covers Cairo and Luxor, or Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh. Nine days adds a Nile cruise and the Red Sea.

If you are travelling in August, we plan the Nile Valley sightseeing for early mornings and put more time on the coast, where the sea makes the heat easier. December and the Easter holidays are ideal for the full route.
